Bio
Michael Murphy was born in Chicago, Illinois, and was raised in a small town in Wisconsin. He graduated from Marquette High School, the University of Arizona, and the Thunderbird Graduate School of International Management. After graduate school, Mr. Murphy joined General Motors Overseas Operations in New York, after which he was assigned to Europe where he resided for five years. He held senior management positions in Scotland, Eastern Europe, Greece, and West Germany. Mr. Murphy began his real estate career with Coldwell Banker (now CBRE) in its Los Angeles office. After a successful brokerage career, Mr. Murphy transitioned into development, joining a Los Angeles based development company as a partner. With Mr. Murphy as its CEO, Murphy Development has master-planned or completed over 10,000,000 square feet of corporate quality industrial and technology buildings. As an integral part of the development process, the company has entitled over 500 acres of projects in the City of San Diego, one of California’s most challenging municipalities. In order to secure the entitlements for the company’s 3,200,000 square foot Brown Field Technology Park, Murphy Development gained approvals from the City of San Diego, the Airport Land Use Commission, and the San Diego Regional Airport Authority. Mr. Murphy and his team are experienced experts in navigating the various entitlement and environmental challenges that are unique to each project. Mr. Murphy is dedicated to creating business parks and individual buildings that are clearly state-of-the-art and best in class. The company’s attention to detail in all aspects of the design and development process is the backbone of the firm’s philosophy of exceeding client expectations. Whether it is the design of California’s most attractive and LEED certified corporate industrial or technology buildings, the creation of unparalleled landscaping in its developments to serve corporate owners and tenants, or the company’s 35-year record of on-time construction completions, Fortune 500 companies, and other users continue to seek Murphy Development buildings. Mr. Murphy has served on the boards and executive committees of a number of not for profit San Diego institutions, including the Scripps Memorial Hospital Foundation, the Bishop’s School, and the Greater San Diego Chamber of Commerce.
