Bio

Michael A. Cantwell is an Executive Vice President with CBRE Capital Markets, Debt & Structured Finance, in Denver, Colorado. During his career, Mr. Cantwell has specialized in several areas. Since entering the Colorado marketplace, he has financed more than 140 office buildings, totaling over 10 million sq. ft. locally. He has also financed some of the region's highest-profile mixed-use projects such as Larimer Square, Belmar and Water Street in Boulder. Complex retail transactions involving ground leases, exclusive uses, co-tenancy, kick-out clauses and covenants, conditions and restrictions are another specialty. 

His earlier career involves stints with CBRE's predecessor firms, Coldwell Banker and L J Melody, respectively. Mr. Cantwell spent several years developing commercial real estate and creating a management and leasing company servicing a portfolio that consisted of office, flex industrial and retail facilities. In 1987, Mr. Cantwell joined The Robert C. Wilson Company to manage its Colorado office. He and several other partners purchased the company in 1995, along with the offices of Spelman Baird and Warner. The partners formed Wilson, Cantwell & Spelman, which operated under a branding agreement with Johnson Capital from 2000 to 2012, when it was sold to CBRE.

Mr. Cantwell holds a BBA degree with a Real Estate Major from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Dr. James Graaskamp led the program that influenced Mr. Cantwell's decision to start his practice in Denver, Colorado.

Active in many local charities, Mr. Cantwell is also a member of ICSC, ULI, NAIOP and The Mortgage Bankers Association. A recognized industry leader, he has won several production awards from life company lenders that he has represented over the years.
