John Darby was born in Charleston and grew up on the Isle of Palms and in Mount Pleasant. As a Charleston native, whose family roots trace back for generations, John Darby understands the area, its people, and Charleston tradition.
Community involvement is a big part of that tradition. In addition to actively serving on The Beach Company’s Board of Director’s, John Darby’s community involvement includes The Citadel Foundation, Trident CEO Council, Palmetto Business Forum, Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce, S.C. Tourism Council, Ashley Hall School Board, New Carolina, the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce and East Cooper Land Trust Advisory Council, to name a few.
Upon graduating from The Citadel in 1985, John Darby started his career in banking with First Union Mortgage Corporation in Residential and Commercial Financing where he worked in Greensboro and Winston-Salem, NC, Orlando, FL and Columbia, SC. In 1988, his uncle Charles S. Way, Jr. approached him to work for The Beach Company. In 1990, John Darby moved back to Charleston to lead the family business, and became president in 1999.
According to John, “Every project has a unique story. The Isle of Palms and Kiawah Island, two of The Beach Company’s flagship projects are certainly noteworthy, but developing Majestic Square, at the corner of King and Market Streets, is special for me personally and the company as a whole. It was one of the first projects that I was involved in from start to finish. The excitement of the project solidified my passion and dedication to the industry.”
