Bio
Gary Otten is head of Real Estate Debt Strategies. He was named to this position in 2013. Otten joined MetLife in 1996 and has served in various capacities within MetLife's real estate group in Atlanta and New Jersey, including mortgage production, mortgage workouts and dispositions, managing loan servicing operations and mortgage information technology system development.
In his prior role, Otten was director of MetLife's real estate portfolio management unit and a member of the real estate investment approval committee. In this role, he was responsible for reviewing and approving all new and modified commercial real estate debt and equity investments, managing servicing and administration activities for the company's commercial loan portfolio, and directing all loan servicing technology initiatives. Otten was named to this position in January 2006. He was involved in over $53 billion of loan originations and $3.3 billion in equity transactions during his tenure. Prior to his portfolio management position, he was responsible for over $1.4 billion of mortgage origination activities for the Southeastern U.S., and managed the Atlanta region's $2.1 billion commercial mortgage loan portfolio.
Before joining MetLife, Otten spent five years in the commercial mortgage origination unit at The Toyo Trust & Banking Company. Responsibilities while at Toyo Trust included construction and permanent loan origination, loan syndication and portfolio management.
Otten graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Hobart College.
