Bio
Brian Butler joined Newmark in 2016 as a senior managing director in the firm's Boston office. With 25 years of experience in commercial real estate finance, he focuses primarily on originating debt and equity placement transactions throughout New England.
Prior to Newmark, Mr. Butler served as the finance director for Corcoran Jennison Companies, where his main responsibilities included reporting to ownership and providing strategic guidance and leadership, as well as analyzing, directing and overseeing the financing of a large and complex portfolio of properties that exceeded $2 billion in value and included 22 multihousing properties and 5,600 units; four hotels; office buildings; and developable land. Day-to-day responsibilities included financing, financial analysis, business plan writing and presentations, loan modifications and restructures. He worked closely with lending institutions such as the GSEs (Freddie Mac/Fannie Mae/FHA), life insurance companies, pension funds, and national, regional and local banks. Notable transactions include the refinancing of Harbor Point on the Bay, a 1,284-unit luxury apartment community located on the South Boston waterfront at the entrance to the University of Massachusetts Boston campus. This was a $215 million refinancing with Freddie Mac. Mr. Butler was also involved in the refinancing of the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Boston - Downtown. This was a $70 million refinancing of the 267-room, full-service hotel located in the heart of Boston's Theatre District.
Prior to joining Corcoran Jennison, Mr. Butler worked at Marwick Associates, a privately held real estate management and development company based in Lexington, Massachusetts. Marwick owns, develops and redevelops office, industrial and retail properties throughout the New England region. Mr. Butler was responsible for business development and real estate acquisitions/financings for Marwick, LLC.
From 1989 through 2005, Mr. Butler was a vice president in the Finance Department at Meredith & Grew, Inc. in Boston. He represented owners and investors by originating debt and equity with various lending sources including life insurance companies, CMBS lenders, regional and local banks and private equity sources.
Mr. Butler graduated from Merrimack College and currently resides in Melrose, Massachusetts, with his wife Sheila and his daughters Haleigh and Hannah.
